Saline Water Conversion Corp. (SWCC) announced that it is preparing for launching the Rabigh-Jeddah-Makkah water transmission system project in the fourth quarter of 2021, Saudi Press Agency reported.

The project, along with the current Shuaibah systems, will provide Makkah, Holy Sites, Jeddah, Taif and Baha with desalinated water. It will start operations in early 2023.

With a 650 km/80-inch diameter twin pipeline, four pumping stations and 47 water tanks, the project has the capacity to transport 1.82 million cubic meters per day (m3/day) of desalinated water.

The project, which uses topnotch, cost-efficient technology, aims to reduce the electricity consumed for producing a cubic meter of desalinated water to less than 2.75 kWh/m3.
