POS transactions hit SAR 10.2 bln in week ending Jan. 8: SAMA

POS device


The point-of-sale (POS) transactions reached SAR 10.23 billion in the week ending Jan. 8, from SAR 11.84 billion in the previous week, data issued by the Saudi Central Bank (SAMA) showed.  

   

Data showed that 122.9 million transactions were processed in the week.  

 

POS transactions represent what is spent by consumers using ATM cards and credit cards in shopping malls, retail stores, pharmacies, etc.

All sectors witnessed a decline in POS transactions during the week, except for hotels sector, which rose by 6%.

 

Education led the declining sectors with a 37% drop. It was followed by furniture and food & beverages sectors, with declines of 24% and 20%, respectively.

 

Consumer spending focused on the food & beverages sector in the week, with nearly SAR 1.48 billion, followed by the restaurants & cafes sector with SAR 1.45 billion.

Riyadh topped the POS transactions by cities in terms of value with nearly SAR 3.22 billion, representing 32% of the total sales. Jeddah came second with SAR 1.62 billion.
