Crown Prince launches second editions of Middle East Green Initiative Summit, Saudi Green Initiative Forum

Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman announced today, Oct. 20, the second editions of the Middle East Green Initiative (MGI) Summit and the Saudi Green Initiative (SGI) Forum, to be held in November in Sharm El-Sheikh city, Egypt.

The MGI Summit will be held on Nov. 7, with the SGI Forum taking place from Nov. 11-12 under the theme ‘From ambition to action’, in tandem with the Sharm El-Sheikh Climate Change Conference (COP27).

The second MGI Summit builds on the success of the first edition hosted by Riyadh in 2021, the Saudi Press Agency reported. It will focus on the key climate challenges that face the region and their global impact, through a strategic platform that strengthens joint cooperation, as well as exchange of knowledge and ideas among the heads of states, government ministers and policymakers in the region. This will contribute to accelerating transition to green economy and building a more sustainable future for generations.

The second SGI Forum will bring together international and regional key speakers, experts and leaders to discuss the progress made on the level of implementation of the initiatives announced earlier by the Kingdom to face climate changes.

The Crown Prince thanked Egypt’s President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi and the Egyptian government for hosting the MGI Summit and SGI Forum in Egypt this year. Both are held in tandem with COP27, which brings nations from around the world together under one roof, to advance global climate ambitions by inspiring joint activity at the local, regional, and international levels.

Both initiatives were launched by Prince Mohammed bin Salman last year to enhance the Kingdom’s environmental efforts in the previous years, in line with Vision 2030.

Under the SGI, Saudi Arabia aims to plant 10 billion trees across the Kingdom in the next decades.

The SGI will increase the percentage of protected areas across the Kingdom to more than 30% of the total land area, and reduce carbon emissions by 278 million tons annually by 2030.

The MGI Summit’s initiatives aim to reduce emissions in the region by over 10% and plant 50 billion trees.
