Saudi ports record 3% rise in container handling in 2022

Saudi ports reported an increase of 13% in cargo throughput to 237 million tons in 2022, compared to 210 million tons a year earlier, the Saudi Ports Authority (MAWANI) said, in a report. 

Moreover, the Saudi ports recorded a 3.2% rise in containers handled to 10.36 million twenty-foot equivalent units (TEUs) in 2022, compared to 10.04 million TEUs in 2021. Outbound and inbound containers amounted to 4.84 million TEUs, a rise of 5% compared to 4.63 million TEUs in 2021. 

 

Transshipment containers also rose by 2% to 5.52 million TEUs in 2022, compared to 5.41 million TEUs in 2021.  

To reinforce the Kingdom's food security and meet the local market demand, Saudi ports saw in 2022 the unloading of 3.93 million heads of livestock, an increase of 9% compared to 3.62 million in 2021.
