Uber plans to provide zero-emission rides by 2040

Uber Technologies announced on Wednesday that it is rebranding its “Uber Green” service to “Uber Electric”, alongside launching a $4,000 grant program for drivers, as part of its push to offer carbon emission–free rides by 2040.

The ride-hailing company will provide the new “Go Electric” grants worth $4,000 to eligible drivers who purchase new or used electric vehicles in select US states, including California, New York, Colorado, and Massachusetts.

The move supports Uber’s climate goals and strengthens its competitive position, following its earlier decision this year to transition Uber Green in the US to an all-electric fleet, phasing out hybrid and battery-powered vehicle mixes.

This move comes after the expiration in September of the $7,500 federal tax credit for new EV purchases—introduced under former US President Joe Biden—which has made EVs more expensive for many buyers.
