The authority attributed the annual increase mainly to a 3.9% rise in prices of housing, water, electricity, gas and other fuels, driven by a 3.9% growth in actual housing rentals. Food and beverage prices rose 1.4%, while transport prices increased 2%.

GASTAT had previously developed its methodology for collecting and calculating the Consumer Price Index in line with international best practices to improve comprehensiveness and accuracy.
The authority also updated the index’s base year to 2023, while updating the items and weights in the consumer price basket and expanding geographical coverage to include all regions.
The Weight of Main Groups (%):
At the regional level, inflation rates varied in August 2026 compared with July. Six regions recorded increases in their annual inflation rates — Riyadh, Madinah, Eastern Province, Hail, Northern Borders and Al-Jouf — while the remaining regions generally saw declines or stability.
Al-Jouf recorded the highest inflation rate at 4.3%, followed by Northern Borders at 3.6%. Qassim recorded the lowest inflation rate at -0.4%.
