Dow Jones tops 53,000 for first time ever
US stocks ended higher on Monday, driven by gains in semiconductor shares, as investor sentiment rebounded from last week's selloff in the sector.
The Dow Jones Industrial Average rose 0.29%, or 155 points, to close at 53,055, marking its first-ever close above the 53,000 level.
The S&P 500 gained 0.72%, or 54 points, to 7,537, while the Nasdaq Composite advanced 1.12%, or 288 points, to 26,121.
The STOXX Europe 600 fell 0.35% to 650 after ending last week at a record high.
The FTSE 100 lost 0.26% to 10,651, while France's CAC 40 declined 0.33% to 8,479. Germany's DAX edged up 0.15% to 25,817.
Japan’s Nikkei 225 erased early losses to finish flat at 69,737, while the broader TOPIX climbed 0.9% to 4,101.
September Brent crude futures fell 0.18%, or 13 cents, to $71.99 a barrel, while August WTI crude futures slipped 0.2%, or 14 cents, to $68.55 a barrel.
August gold futures rose 1%, or $41.80, to settle at $4,167.50 per ounce.
What moved markets? Semiconductor stocks boosted investor appetite amid optimism over continued strong earnings from artificial intelligence companies. Investors are also awaiting the upcoming earnings season and the minutes of the Federal Reserve's latest meeting for clues on the future path of interest rates.
