US stocks end lower, show mixed performance
US stocks fell on Friday, ending the week mixed after the August jobs report showed continued strength in the labor market, bolstering expectations that the Federal Reserve could hike interest rates at its upcoming meeting.
At the close, the Dow Jones Industrial Average fell 0.51%, or 271 points, to 53,414, bringing its weekly decline to 0.27%.
The broader S&P 500 dropped 0.38%, or 29 points, to 7,718, but ended the week little changed.
The Nasdaq Composite also declined 0.29%, or 77 points, to 26,506, while posting a weekly gain of 0.40%.
In Europe, the STOXX Europe 600 rose 0.12% to 649 points, but fell 0.81% over the week.
The FTSE 100 was flat at 10,831 points, while Germany's DAX gained 0.17% to 26,046. France's CAC 40 edged down 0.10% to 8,278.
In Japan, the Nikkei 225 climbed 1.26% to 65,020 points, while the broader TOPIX was flat at 4,103.
In oil markets, Brent crude futures for November delivery rose 0.80%, or 76 cents, to $96.28 a barrel.
US WTI crude futures for October delivery gained 0.20%, or 18 cents, to $91.48 a barrel.
Gold futures for December delivery fell 1.39%, or $63.30, to $4,476.60 an ounce.
Market Drivers
The jobs report strengthened expectations for a U.S. interest-rate increase this month, while rising bond yields added pressure on equities. The outlook for monetary policy, however, will remain dependent on inflation data due next week.
